Lacrosse Topped by Ranked Air Force Squad

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Although the VMI lacrosse team trailed by just a 7-2 margin at the half, No. 12 ranked Air Force put the game away in the second half to top the Keydets by a 13-3 score Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Under unique circumstances, the game had to be moved indoors due to inclement weather and was played at the Holaday Athletic Center instead of Falcon Stadium.

Air Force's Shelton Collier scored in the game's first minute before teammates Chris Walsch, Matthew Duenes and Marcus Ward notched three more goals for the Falcons in the opening period.

After three Falcon goals in the second quarter, VMI's Dale Mattice put the Keydets on the board with three minutes before the break with an unassisted goal, his sixth of the season. Looking for momentum heading into intermission, Tom Nofi scored another goal for the Keydets with only four seconds on the clock to go into the half with a slighter 7-2 deficit.

The Falcons managed two goals in the third period while keeping VMI off the scoreboard before adding three more throughout the fourth quarter.

With only 30 seconds left in regulation, VMI sophomore Wesley Sanders put in the Keydets' final tally of the game to keep his scoring streak alive. Ranked fourth in the league in goals score, the Austin, Texas native has now scored a goal in 12 consecutive games.

The Keydets will play their final home game of the season next Saturday as league foe Bellarmine visits Lexington for a Senior Day matchup. The first faceoff is slated for a noon start at Drill Field 2.
