NEWARK, Del. – Coming off their first win of the season Saturday at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the VMI lacrosse team looked to continue the momentum but fell to host Delaware Tuesday afternoon by a 14-6 score in Newark, Delaware.
Three quick strikes by the Blue Hens in the opening five minutes put Delaware up early before VMI sophomore Wesley Sanders trimmed the lead to 3-2 following consecutive goals midway through the period. Delaware's Andrew Romagnoli then caught fire to score three of four Delaware goals the remainder of the period as the Blue Hens' lead ballooned to 7-2 after one quarter. Romagnoli would go on to score six goals for Delaware during the match.
Despite a VMI goal by Tom Nofi early in the second quarter, the Blue Hens increased their lead to 9-3 by halftime.
VMI's Eric Shaver tallied a point for VMI midway through the third quarter off an assist from Sanders before Sanders scored two more goals in the fourth for the Keydets' final score.
Sanders finished the game with a team-high seven shots while Dale Mattice finished with three. Freshman defender Kyle Walsh earned a team-high five groundballs with goalie Joe Riccadonna and Pat Hine each registering three.
The Keydets return to Lexington for their home opener Saturday night against SoCon foe Richmond. The first faceoff is slated for a 6 p.m. start at North Post Field No. 2.
