EMMITSBURG, Md. – Seeking a second road victory for the season, the VMI lacrosse team was defeated by host Mount St. Mary's by a 14-2 score Saturday afternoon at Waldron Stadium in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The Keydets fell in the faceoff battle as the Mountaineers took possession on 15 of 19 attempts, resulting in more offensive opportunities and a 37-23 shots advantage. When VMI took possession of the ball on its own end of the field, the Mount was effective in its defensive pressure as the Keydets were successful on 12 of 19 attempts and forced VMI into 17 turnovers.

Ahead 1-0 after one period of play, the Mountaineers increased their attack in the second quarter to score seven goals on 12 shot attempts and pull away to an insurmountable 8-0 lead at the half. The Mount's Bubba Johnson and Chris DiPretoro scored two goals apiece in the period to help the home team up its lead.

After two Mount St. Mary's goals to open the second half, VMI sophomore Wesley Sanders put the Keydets on the board with an unassisted goal at the 7:50 mark. Teammate Hunt McCarthy scored his first goal of the year moments later to trim the Mount advantage to 11-2 going into the fourth quarter.

Despite eight VMI shot attempts in the final quarter, the Keydets were unable to add anymore scores as the game came to a conclusion.

Sanders finished the game with five shot attempts while Dale Mattice, Tom Nofi and Austin Hughes each contributed three. Goalie Joe Riccadonna logged 12 saves in 52 minutes of play.

The Keydets return to action Tuesday with a home game against Monmouth at 3 p.m. on Drill Field 2.
