WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The VMI Keydet track and field teams put three throwers in the top six places in the men's shot put, and all told, had five IC4A qualifying efforts on the final day of the Camel City Invitational, contested Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Jordan White paced the VMI efforts in the shot Saturday, coming home third with a best effort of 16.28 meters (53'5"), while Joel Hoisington was one place behind White in fourth with his 16.17 meter (53'0 3/4") heave. Both White and Hoisington qualified for the IC4A Championships, with Hoisington doing so for the second straight meet. Hoisington also moved up three places on VMI's all-time shot put list, vaulting to seventh with his new personal best.
In fact, it was a trio of personal bests in the shot as Grant Sanchez recorded a 15.61 meter effort (51'2 3/4"), good enough for sixth place.
Others to post IC4A qualifying times included Aron Long, who was fourth in the 200-meters. Long crossed the line in 22.33, an effort that when converted to allow for flat track adjustment, was good enough to post an IC4A mark. It was the second straight meet that had seen Long qualify to the IC4A's. Pete Reed was 13th in that same event (22.88).
The Keydet distance medley relay will also be heading to the IC4A meet after Kyle Sabourin, Deondre Anderson, Josh Willard and Avery Martin put up a 10:17.24 time that was good enough for fifth place.
Greg Henderson was the remaining IC4A qualifier as he accomplished the feat in the 60-meter dash, where he placed 16th in 6.98 seconds.
Finally, Davon Guerrier was 27th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.34), and the 4X400-meter relay squad of Anderson, Andrew Gould, Tyriuq Trotman and Brian Donna was fifth in 3:23.82. That unit narrowly missed qualifying for the IC4A Championships.
On the women's side, it was a strong day for Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe, who threatened two school records. The sophomore recorded an 8.90 in the 60-meter hurdles, less than one-tenth off of the VMI best she set last year, while she climbed within two-tenths of the 60-meter dash school record. In that event, she was 22nd with a time of 7.90, just shy of the PR of 7.81 she recorded last season.
Other women's results saw the distance medley relay squad of Kennedy Flynn, Julia Logan, Christina Hill and Bethany King place fourth with a time of 12:39.13.
VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, Feb. 5, when the Keydets begin the YSU National Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio.
