Rifle Squads Sweep Penn State in Home Finale

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Virginia Military Institute coed and women's rifle teams were dialed in as the Keydet sharpshooters swept visiting Penn State University Saturday at the Kilbourne Hall Rifle Range. The coed team scored a 4,513, while the women fired a 4,202. Penn State put through a score of 4,004.

The coed squad had the high scores for both smallbore and air rifle, posting a 2,217 and 2,296, respectively. The VMI women logged a 2,019 in smallbore while combining for a 2,183 air rifle score. Penn State's score was hurt by a 1,984 smallbore score, but the Nittany Lions rebounded with a 2,020 on the air rifle side.

VMI's mixed team swept the top five smallbore scores, paced by a 562 by Jeremy Bolden. Zach Johnson and Connor Sullivan were a close second with a 552 each, followed by Andrew Hickey's 551 to round out the scoring. Loran Dreelin fired a 548 as VMI's fifth smallbore shooter.

The mixed squad also topped the charts in smallbore, claiming the top seven slots. Sullivan logged a 581 out of 600, followed by Bolden's 578. Dreelin scored third with a 572 while Kristen Voss rounded out the scoring with a 565. Mathew Lusardi shot a 562, followed by a 558 and 552 from Zach Johnson.

On the women's side, Emily Hill and Rachel Jankelow had the top air rifle scores, each putting through a 549. Vania Murica notched a 543, edging teammate Katherine Watson's 542. Samantha Alexander shot a 526 as VMI's fifth shooter.

Jankelow led the Keydet women in smallbore with a 517, followed by a 509 from Murica. Hill posted a 501 while Watson rounded out the scoring with a 492.

Lauren Thompson shot a 543 smallbore score for Penn State, followed by a 521 from fellow Nittany Lion Nick Welsh. Paul McFarland and Parker Sweeney rounded out Penn State's smallbore scoring with a 478 and 442, respectively.

Thompson again led Penn State in air rifle with a 547 with Welsh shooting a 511. McFarland with third with a 499 with Sweeney rounding out the scoring with a 463.

The Keydets are idle until Feb. 22 when VMI heads to Lexington, Ky. for the sectional qualifier. VMI rounds out the season on March 7 with the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Championships, hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.
