LEWISBURG, Pa. -- It was the closest game of the young season for the Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team, but host Bucknell University clipped the Keydets 14-12 in VMI's finale of the Bison Invitational.
VMI (1-3) and Bucknell tied with four goals in the second quarter while the Keydets won the third quarter 4-3, but it was a 4-2 first period and a 3-2 fourth that was the differenced for the Bison.
Mackenzie Perkins continued her torrid scoring pace, potting nearly half of VMI's goals with five. Perkins helped VMI out-score the Bison in the third stanza with two goals while scoring one goal in the other three quarters. Likewise, Shelby Barkley notched two goals in the third for her pair on the day.
Rebecca Serrano notched one goal in each of the even quarters. Caitlyn Jackson and Natalie Rivas finished with one goal apiece. Rivas took all four sprints for the Keydets, winning the dash in the first two quarters.
The Keydets are off until March 7 and 8 when they head to Cambridge, Mass. VMI clashes with two Ivy League schools on March 7, opening with Brown University at 12:45 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. clash with Princeton University.
