LYNCHBURG, Va. - Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe won both the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles while approaching VMI records in both, as she led the Keydet women's track and field program on the opening day of the Liberty Quad, contested Friday in Lynchburg, Va.
Agyepong-Wiafe claimed the title in the 60-meter dash, winning in 7.81 seconds. That lowered her previous best time of the season, which is the second-fastest clocking in school history, and closed her to within a tenth of the school record of 7.73 seconds.
The freshman then claimed the title in the 60-meter hurdles, winning in a finish that came down to the thousandth of a second. Agyepong-Wiafe timed in at 8.913 seconds, also the second-fastest time in school history and the fifth-quickest time in the SoCon this season. It was just .03 seconds off Ashley West's school record and only .06 seconds away from an ECAC qualifying time.
Other victors on the women's side included Kerisha Goode, who won the triple jump with a best leap of 11.27 meters (36'11 3/4"), the second-best triple jump in school history. Goode now ranks fourth in the conference in that event. She also finished sixth in the 200-meters Friday, with a time of 26.95 seconds.
Hannah Dickinson, Bethany King and Mia McClain were also event winners Friday. Dickinson dominated the mile, winning by over eight seconds in 5:09.99, while King prevailed in the 3K by a similar margin, crossing the line in 10:33.87. McClain beat a small field in the long jump, stretching the tape to 5.24 meters (17'2 1/4").
In other results, Renee Reives was second in the shot put after hurling the implement 13.40 meters (43'11 3/4"). Kennedy Flynn finished fifth in the 800-meters in 2:21.35, moving up to fifth on VMI's all-time listing in that event and just besting teammate Christina Hill, who was sixth in 2:21.80.
Finally, Deborah Allison was seventh in the pentathlon with 2737 points, the third-highest total in school history.
VMI women's track and field will return to action Feb. 21, when the Keydets take part in the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
