SPARTANBURG, S.C. - VMI's Avery Martin was named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, while teammate Quincy Murphy won the conference's Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor in information released by the SoCon Thursday morning.
Martin had a banner meet at Youngstown State this past weekend, winning both the 800 and 1,000-meters in IC4A qualifying times. His 1,000-meter time ranked second in school history, while his 800 time was fourth and a meet record. Martin enters this weekend's meet at Liberty with three IC4A qualifying times already under his belt this indoor season.
Murphy, meanwhile, set a new personal best with 5,074 points in his heptathlon victory. He currently leads the conference in that event.
Murphy and Martin are VMI's first SoCon track and field honorees since rejoining the league prior to the start of this academic year.
VMI track and field returns to action Friday, as the Keydets take part in the Liberty Quad in Lynchburg. Action gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
