Sharpshooters Have Record Outing at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Behind a record setting performance, the Virginia Military Institute coed rifle team posted 4,544 points to lead the day at The Citadel. The program's record mark helped the coed squad top The Citadel's coed squad, which shot a 4,415 and Columbus State University's 4,523 at Inouye Marksmanship Center. VMI's women's team posted a 4,241, edging the Bulldogs' 4,227.

With the win, VMI won The Citadel's flag as the program's exchange banners to the winner, avenging a 4,482-4,442 loss in the season opener on Sept. 27 in Lexington.

The coed team shot the lights in smallbore, accruing the top six scores on the day. VMI was paced by Jeremy Bolden, who fired a 573 out of a possible 600. Connor Sullivan was second with a 568 while Andrew Hickey notched a 565. Kristen Voss was VMI's final smallbore scorer with a 560, with Zach Johnson and Lauren Dreelin shooting a 557 and a 556, respectively.

Bolden led the coed Keydets with a 574 in air rifle, followed closely by Dreelin's 573. Hickey posted a 570 with Sullivan as the fourth scorer, tallying a 564.

On the women's side, Emily Hill had the top smallbore score with a 540. Vania Murica was second for the Keydets with a 528, followed by Rachel Jankelow's 519 and Loyce Lightfoot's 518. In air rifle, Katherine Watson fired a 547 while Lightfoot posted a 531. Murica and Jankelow tied with a 529 to round out VMI's scoring.

Columbus State had the next four smallbore shooters as Marko Maksivoic, Kelly Orck and JS Felding each shot a 555. Jay Cross rounded out Columbus State's score with a 553. Maksivoic had the day's top air rifle score with a 583, with teammates Cross and Orck finishing second and third, respectively, on the day with a 582 and a 578. Meghan Robertson was CSU's final air rifle scorer with a 565.

The Citadel's coed smallbore team was paced by a 549 from Robert Jackson, with Nathaniel Moy posting a 541. Morgan Long and Richard Hunton logged a 539 and 530, respectively. Jackson had the top air rifle score for The Citadel with a 577, pacing Long's 562, Hunton's 561 and Colton Poole's 556.

For the Bulldog women, Elizabeth Ordway shot a 522, Jennifer Burch hit a 518, followed by a 513 and a 512 from Haley Osmar and Amber Mills, respectively. Burch led the Bulldog women's smallbore squad with a 548, followed a 544 from each of Mills and Ordway. Osmar had the final score with a 526.

VMI is idle until Feb. 7 when the Keydets host Penn State University and the United States Coast Guard Academy. Action is set for 8 a.m. at the Kilbourne Hall Rifle Range. The trio of teams meet again the next day at the same time and loction.
