LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 2014-15 rifle season got under way Saturday as the Virginia Military Institute mixed and women's teams hosted the University of North Georgia and The Citadel at the Kilbourne Hall Range. North Georgia combined for a total score of 4,516 for the day's high score.
The Citadel's mixed team shot a combined 4,482 for the day's second best set of scores, followed by VMI's mixed team, which posted a score of 4,442. The Citadel's women's squad fired a 4,213, edging the Keydets' women's squad, which posted a 4,130.
Connor Sullivan had the high score on the small bore side for the Keydets' mixed squad as the senior shot a 560, just nine points of the day's high of 569, shot by The Citadel's Robert Jackson. Jeremy Bolden was VMI's next top shooter on small bore, finishing with a 551 while Mathew Lusardi posted a 547. Kristen Voss capped with a 543 for a combined 2,187.
The mixed squad was clustered together in the standings, all finishing within four points of one another. Hickey proved to be the mixed squad's top shooter with a 565 while Bolden fired a 564. Dreelin and Sullivan each posted a 563 to get the mixed group a 2,255.
On the women's side, Emily Hill was the Keydets' top shooter in air rifle, targeting a 539 while Vania Murica shot a 538. Rachel Jankelow posted a 533 in air rifle as Tina Kor put through a 515, combining the women's side for a 2125.
In small bore, the women's squad was led by Murica's 526, followed by a 510 from Hill. Kor fired a 487 as Jankelow netted a 482 for a combined 2,005.
VMI's sharpshooters return to action on Oct. 4 as the Keydets make their way to Annapolis, Maryland to shoot against John Jay University and SUNY Maritime.
