VMI right-hander Reed Garrett has been named to the Gregg Olson Award Watch List, according to information released by the honor Tuesday.
The Gregg Olson Award is in its second season and is presented to a player who, after having mixed successes previously in his collegiate career, has broken through to an elite level in his current season. The award, presented by Toolshed Sports, is given to college baseball's breakout player of the year.
Garrett has turned in a banner junior season, posting a 2.07 ERA and .199 opponent batting average just one season after seeing his era sit at 5.56. This season, Garrett also threw the first no-hitter in Division I, bested Lafayette on Feb. 21.
Initial nominations were made by sports information contacts at schools across the country, while semifinalists and finalists will be determined by an independent panel. Semifinalists are slated to be named, Friday, May 30th at the start of NCAA Regional play and the finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6th at the beginning of Super Regional action. The winner of the 2014 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park from June 15-June 25/26. 2013.
