LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- For the first time in program history, the Virginia Military Institute women's water polo completed a season sweep of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent, topping Saint Francis Brooklyn 16-9 Saturday afternoon. The Keydets fell in their first game of the day 14-13 against host Siena College.
Earlier this season, VMI topped the Terriers 13-10 in the team's league opener. The Keydets (11-16, 3-5 MAAC) split their season series with Siena after topping the Saints 16-8 on March 29.
Rookie Bailey Huddleston, was the driving force for VMI against Siena, potting six goals at the Siena Swim Center, including four in the second half of the one-goal game. Junior Mackenzie Perkins also logged a hat trick with three goals. Senior Molly Andoe put away two goals in the first quarter while freshman Cecilya Lundy notched one goal. In the rack for VMI, sophomore Emily Cait Farsakian made six saves in the loss.
The second game of the season against the Saints was a back and forth affair that featured eight ties and eight lead changes, with neither team gaining an advantage greater than two goals. But it was not to be VMI's day as a Keydet took and exclusion with just over 10 seconds left in regulation, VMI's second in the final 30 seconds of the game and the game tied 13-13. Siena's Brianna Ritota scored with 4.8 seconds left while in a 6-4 advantage to seal the win.
Huddleston was a force again for VMI as she led the St. Francis Brooklyn game with another six goals for a 12-marker day. Andoe got in on the scoring as well, tucking away four goals against the Terriers. Perkins finished with a second hat trick, while Celine Lazzaro also scored two goals.
Farsakian made 11 saves, holding a MAAC foe to single digits for a second time this weekend. In Saturday's action, Farsakian and VMI held Villanova University to nine goals as well.
VMI begins its final weekend of the MAAC regular season on Saturday on Staten Island as Wagner College hosts the action. The Keydets kick off the day at noon against Villanova, followed by a 4 p.m. clash with Marist College. Both games on Saturday will be held at Wagner Pool.
