Winn Named to Johnny Bench Award Watch List

WICHITA, Kan. - For the second consecutive year, VMI catcher Matt Winn has been named to the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, presented annually by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission to the top catcher in Division I. The award is sponsored by baseballsavings.com.

Last season, Winn was one of 15 semifinalists for the award and was the first VMI catcher ever to reach that point in the selection process. This year, he is among 72 catchers on this listing at the present time, but more may be added between now and May 5. The semifinalists are then announced on May 15, with three finalists being selected by a national voting panel and named on June 3. The award will be presented in Wichita, Kansas at the Greater Wichita Area Sports Banquet on June 26.

Winn missed the opening weekend of this season, but since his return, the Keydets have gone 6-2, including a win over #1 Virginia in Charlottesville and a no-hitter against Lafayette on Feb. 21.

VMI baseball returns to action Saturday, playing host to Binghamton for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
