RICHMOND, Va. – Avery Martin and Will Thompson recorded runner-up finishes for VMI track and field, while five other Keydets earned third-place results at the opening day of the Fred Hardy Invitational, contested Friday in Richmond, Va.
Martin finished second in the men's 1,500-meters, clocking in at 3:52.19 for a new personal best, while Thompson was second in the men's 10,000-meters, finishing in 32:21.72. VMI had third-place results in both the men's and women's pole vaults, with Kate Collins clearing 3.50 meters (11'5 ¾”) to tie with the eventual winner, but fall on misses. Grant Holmes, meanwhile, tied for third with a 4.65 meter (15'3”) effort.
VMI also had three of the top six finishers in the men's 5K, with Cabell Willis finishing third to lead that trio (15:11.03). Patrick Spahn finished fifth in 15:17.44 and Brandon White was sixth with a 15:30.41 effort.
Renee Reives, coming off an event win last week at VCU, placed third in the women's shot with a 13.63 meter (44'8 ¾”) heave, while Logan Edwards was third in the women's hammer throw with a personal best mark of 45.76 M/150'1”. Finally, Joel Hoisington placed fifth in the men's shot put at 15.32 M/50'3 ¼”.
VMI track and field returns to action Saturday, competing at the second and final day of the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond. Action is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
