Covington's 33 Leads VMI over Longwood, 86-66

FARMVILLE, Va. - Senior center D.J. Covington scored a career-high tying 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead VMI past Longwood University, 86-66, in the Big South regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Willett Hall.

Covington logged his 16th double-double of the year and eighth over the past nine games by shooting 12-of-17 from the floor and draining 9-of-12 from the line. Covington also racked up six blocks which pushed his season total to 91 – just two off his own school season record for blocks set last season.

VMI won its eighth contest over the last 10 games and completed the regular season with an 18-11 overall mark and 11-5 in the Big South Conference. The Keydets hit the 18-win mark three years ago in the 2010-11 campaign.

The Keydets entered the game knowing they would be the #2 seed in the Big South North Division and earned a first round bye in the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championships which begins Wednesday in Conway, S.C. VMI will start tourney play Friday night in the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. against the winner of #3S Gardner-Webb/#6N Longwood.

VMI senior guard Rodney Glasow flirted with a triple-double and scored nine points, dished out 10 assists, and grabbed eight rebounds. It marked the fifth game this season that Glasgow compiled 10 assists in a game.

Keydet freshman guard Q.J. Peterson added 13 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Keydets who secured their fifth conference road win of the season.

Longwood placed four in double-figures scoring on its Senior Day and was led by sophomore forward Karl Zigler while senior guard Tristan Carey scored 16 points in his final game at Willet Hall. The Lancers closed out the regular season 8-23, 3-13 BSC.

The Keydets won their fifth straight over the Lancers in the series and closed out their last regular season game in the Big South Conference on a winning note. VMI will return to the Southern Conference in 2014-15.

VMI shot 46.3% from the floor and hit 7-of-29 from beyond the arc and converted 17-of-21 free throws for 81% including 9-of-10 in the second half. The Lancers were held to 31.9% shooting from the floor including 3-of-16 beyond the arc. VMI held a 42-32 advantage in points in the paint.

The first 10 minutes of regulation saw three ties and six lead changes before VMI was able to secure the lead for good in the opening half. Covington's jumper tied the game at 17-17 with 10:13 left and followed with another jumper to push the Keydet ahead 19-17. VMI's lead was just 32-30 after Ziglar hit a conventional three-point play at the 3:22 mark, but the Keydets closed out the half on an 8-2 run with Glasgow contributing five points to take a 38-30 intermission lead.

Two decisive runs broke the game open for the Keydets in the second half which added up to a combined 21-2 spurt over a span of eight minutes. A pair of Covington jumpers bookended a string of 12 straight points to extend VMI's lead to 56-39 at 13:22. After a Jelayni Dublin jumper, the Keydets reeled off four consecutive treys with sophomore Tim Marshall nailing three straight from long range to give VMI a 68-43 lead at the midway point of the half.

Longwood could come no closer than 16 points (82-66) when Leron Fisher hit a 3-pointer at 1:42 for the hosts.

VMI Head Coach Duggar Baucom -

When we got the ball into D.J., he was magnificent. He gave us a great lift to start the second half. We got it into him and he had two 3-point plays back-to-back and got us going and Tim Marshall made some threes. I was really pleased with the effort in the second half once we had the lead.”

Rodney Glasow did a great job defensively on (Tristan) Carey and made him work for everything. He had 16, but he had to earn all of them. I thought the guys were pretty good defensively the whole game and to hold them to 66 points in their gym -two years ago, they got 110 points on us here. So to hold them to almost half of that is good.”

Glad to hit number 18. That was a good one for us. And to go 11-5 in the conference isn't bad and to go through the conference and never lose back-to-back games is a good thing.”
