Morehead State Edges Mixed, Women's Rifle Teams

LEXINGTON, Va. -- A program record from Jeremy Bolden was not enough as the Virginia Military Institute mixed and women's rifle teams fell to visiting Morehead State University Saturday. The Eagles fired a combined 4,554 while VMI's mixed squad shot a 4,468 while the women's team logged a 4,168 at the Kilbourne Hall Rifle Range.

Bolden shot a school record 582, out of a possible 600, on the air rifle side of the range, setting a day high by eight points over Morehead State's Daniel Hall.

VMI's mixed team combined for 2,269 points on air rifle, paced by Bolden. Kristen Voss had a squad second-best with a 564, while Connor Sullivan finished with a 562. Mathew Lusardi posted a 561 to round out VMI's air rifle scoring.

On the smallbore side, Bolden once again led VMI with a combined 560 in the weapon's three positions, prone, kneeling and standing. Sullivan logged a 552 as Andrew Hickey notched a 544 in smallbore. Voss was the Keydets' final smallbore scorer with a 543.

The women's team was paced by Emily Hill, who fired a 539 on air rifle, edging teammate Rachel Jankelow by one point. Katherine Watson posted a 537 while Vania Murica rounded out the day with a 525. The squad's smallbore efforts were led by Murica and her 525. Jankelow had the team's second best day with the weapon, combining for a 510. Hill posted a 506 while Tina Kor logged a 488 for a team score of 2,029.

Morehead State was led by Ethan Cole in the air rifle discipline, after he fired a 574. Haley Wilson finished with a 570 while Christian Hashgen notched a 569, just three points more than teammate Jumell Wilson, combining for a 2,279. The Eagles' smallbore was led once again by Cole with a 574. Joseph Fischer finished second with a 572 as Jumell WIlson put through a 568. Russel Smith was the fourth and final scorer with a 561.

The VMI squads return to action next weekend for an action-packed two days. On Saturday, VMI hosts University of the Sciences, the United States Military Academy and North Carolina State University. The Keydets return to the Kilbourne Hall Rifle Range on Sunday for matches against NC State and University of Kentucky. Both days as scheduled to begin around 8 a.m. in Lexington.
