STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team fell in its final pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games Sunday afternoon at Wagner College. The Keydets dropped a 10-4 decision to the host and suffered a 14-4 loss to perennial power Iona College.
In the opener, VMI got goals from four different sources. Mackenzie Perkins potted the first Keydet goal in the second, followed by three second half goals from Heather Magill and Caitlyn Jackson in the third and Emily Cait Farsakian in the fourth.
Between the pipes, Molly Watkins made 11 saves against the Seahawks, who have finished runner-up at the MAAC tournament in each of the last two seasons.
Against the Gaels, Celine Lazzaro notched a hat trick. The sophomore captain had her 16-game scoring streak snapped against the Seahawks, but resumed her scoring ways against Iona. Jackson scored the Keydets lone fourth-quarter goal.
In goal, Watkins again had a standout game, making another 10 saves against the two-time defending champions. However, Watkins incurred three exclusions and was forced to sit out for the rest of the game. Amanda Berrios, who played a majority of the time in goal for VMI last season, stepped in and made one save in the fourth quarter.
VMI returns to action next Saturday for the season finale. The Keydets had a game scheduled at home with Salem International University, but the Tigers forfeited the remainder of the season. VMI travels to our nation's capital to take on George Washington University for a 6 p.m. game.
