Water Polo Splits Final Set of West Coast Games

Women?s Water Polo Edged in Pair at Claremont Convergence

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- In some of its closest games of the program's history on the West Coast, the Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team was edged in its first two games of the Claremont Convergence. In a close battle, La Verne University took the first game 8-4, followed by Redlands defeating VMI 13-6 in the nightcap.

In the second game, the first quarter was a see-saw affair. Joyze Zabala notched a goal with a shade under six minutes left to tie the game 1-1. After Redlands took a 3-1 lead, Lazzaro put away her only goal of the game to make it 3-2.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 6-2, reeling off three unanswered goals to open the second quarter. Mackenzie Perkins broke up the run, pulling VMI (6-5) back within 6-3.

But a run of five goals gave the Bulldogs a 10-3 advantage before freshman Caitlyn Jackson put away VMI's fourth goal of the game. Redlands scored another pair of markers to add insurance to their total, but it was a pair of Keydets who scored the final tallies of the day. Zabala tucked away her second of the game, just two minutes after senior Amanda Berrios scored.

In goal for VMI against Redlands, freshman Emily Cait Farsakian made seven stops.

The Keydets return to action on Saturday in the conclusion of the Claremont Convergence. VMI opens with host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 10:20 a.m. at the Athenas' Axelrood Pool. The Keydets round out the Convergence with a match against Occidental at 3:40 p.m., a game which will be played at Pomona College's Haldeman Aquatic Center.
