Women?s Water Polo Splits Results at Grove City Tournament

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- In its second day of games this weekend, the Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team split its matchups during the Grove City Tournament, falling 14-3 against Gannon University, but bouncing back 13-8 over Washington & Jefferson College.

The tournament, hosted at Grove City's College Pool, was contested Saturday. The Keydets were slated to face Salem International University, but the Tigers forfeited their matches.

In the opener, the Knights tripped up the Keydets, who bested Gannon 14-11 earlier in the season. VMI was held scoreless through the first half of play, while Gannon jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two quarters. The Keydets scored three goals in the second half, including two in the fourth quarter. Leading scorer Celine Lazzaro had two goals while Joyce Zabala had the third.

Against Washington & Jefferson in game two, VMI (6-3) used a strong first quarter to take the edge, notching five goals in the opening quarter, while allowing only two. The two teams went goal for goal over the next two quarters, each scoring twice in the second and three times in the third, but VMI's three-goal fourth quarter, coupled with its first period efforts, gave VMI the 13-8 victory.

Three Keydets logged hat tricks in the second game, including Lazzaro, who scored 12 times this weekend. Mackenzie Perkins and Caitlyn Jackson each scored three times while Zabala and Heather Magill chipped in one goal apiece.

VMI heads west for its next round of games, kicking off a California road trip with on Mar. 8 at the Claremont Convergence. The Keydets face La Verne at 11:20 a.m. (PST) and round out day one with CSU Bernardino at 2 p.m. (PST).
