VMI Splits Third Day of California Competition

PASADENA, Calif. -- It was another day of non-conference action for the Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team. The Keydets split their contests on Tuesday, falling to Occidental College, but bouncing back later in the day with a rousing 14-3 win over California Institute of Technology.

The Keydets were meeting Occidental for the second time during the team's nine-game road trip through California. On Sunday, the Keydets collected their first-ever win over a school from California 9-8, but the Tigers exacted revenge at Taylor Pool, 15-5. However, the Keydets rebounded in the evening, besting Caltech 14-3 at Braun Pool.

The win over Caltech was the program's first over the Beavers and helped VMI improve to 8-7 on the season. The Keydets have logged two wins on the west coast in the last week.

In the opener, VMI got its goals from four different sources as Heather Magill scored twice to lead the Keydets. Mackenzie Perkins, Justina Dunne and Caitlyn Jackson each scored once for VMI.

Game two saw the Keydets potent offense come to life. A team that scores nearly 10 goals a game, the Keydets exploded for 14 against Caltech, a team that edged the Keydets 13-11 last season. The Keydets got a career-best game in the field from senior Amanda Berrios, who put away four goals against the Beavers. Last season, Berrios played goal for VMI and has converted to a field player in 2013.

Sophomore Justina Dunne turned in a hat trick which she kicked off with two goals in the first quarter, followed her final goal in the third stanza. Perkins, Celine Lazzaro and Joyce Zabala each scored a pair for VMI. The Keydets were dominant in the sprints as well, with Dunne collecting the ball on all four during the game.

The Keydets are right back at it tomorrow as they take on the Poets of Whittier College. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. (PST) at the Poets' Slade Aquatics Center.
