WICHITA, Kan. - VMI catcher Matt Winn is one of 48 backstops selected to the initial watch list for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com, as announced Monday by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
So far in 2013, the redshirt sophomore catcher is hitting .257 in 14 games, and has started 11 of those contests. Winn hit a dramatic 10th-inning home run against Binghamton March 2, and has thrown out just under 39% of the runners trying to steal against him this year.
The initial list of 48 will be updated by the group until May 6, and then the semifinalists will be announced on May 16. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4, 2013. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27, 2013.
