Water Polo Splits Friday Action; Falls to Mercyhurst, Downs Penn State Behrend

ERIE, Pa. -- The Virginia Military Institute women's water polo team continued to roll Friday night, split a pair of games, hosted by Mercyhurst University. The Keydets fell in the opening game to the host Lakers 15-10, but bounced back in the second game with a decisive 13-3 win over Penn State Behrend at North East Aquatic Center.

VMI (4-2) had a plethora of goal scorers in the first game, with five different Keydets finding the back of the net. The team's top scorers against the Lakers were Celine Lazzaro and freshman Caitlyn Jackson, both of whom struck three times. Lazzaro scored twice in the first quarter, with her third goal coming in the fourth, while Jackson scored in the first, third and fourth quarters.

Mackenzie Perkins was another multiple goal scorer for VMI, netting a pair, while Justina Dunne and Elise Reed each scored once.

In goal for VMI, freshman Molly Watkins made four saves, including a trio in the second quarter. She made one stop in the third. Watkins, who is 6-1 and plays in goal when VMI is in the shallow end of the pool, split time with Emily Cait Farsakian. The latter played in the first and third quarters, making one stop in the third stanza.

Against Penn State Behrend, it was Perkins who led the way for VMI, exploding for five goals, a career best for the sophomore. Perkins was all but unstoppable in the first quarter, scoring four times while her fifth marker came in the third.

Lazzaro continued her scoring ways, post another four goals against Penn State Behrend, bringing her season total to 23 goals in just six games. The Keydets got single goals from Jackson, Reed, Amanda Berrios and Ally Van Valen.

Between the pipes, Watkins posted another four saves while Farsakian stopped two shots. The pair allowed just three Penn State Behrend markers, a program record for fewest goals allowed in a game, besting the mark of six, set in VMI's program opener against Salem International University last season.

The Keydets remain in Western Pennsylvania for a tournament, hosted by Grove City College. VMI opens the day with Gannon University at 10:40 a.m., followed by a second game with Washington & Jefferson College at 2:40 p.m. The Keydets were slated to play Salem International, but the Tigers forfeited their games. All games will be played at Grove City's College Pool.
