High-Shooting Offense Not Enough as Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 at Richmond

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. -- Despite more than doubling its opponents in total shots, the Virginia Military Institute men's soccer team fell 2-0 in a non-conference tilt against the University of Richmond Friday night under the lights at Robins Stadium.

A goal in each half lifted the Spiders (2-5-0) over the Keydets, who have now split their season games against Atlantic 10 opponents. Houston Oldham recorded Richmond's first marker in the 10th minute to go up 1-0. The Spiders sealed the game with a second goal in the 76th minute from Chris Hoerner. Mitch Reavis collected the assist.

VMI (1-5-0) ripped off 26 shots in the game, including 16 in the second half, compared to Richmond's 12. The Keydets challenged throughout the game, led by Matt Seinfeld's 11 shots, three of which were on cage. Seinfeld accounted for three of VMI's five shots on goal, all of which were turned aside by Richmond's Chris Grover.

The Keydets held the advantage in corner kicks as well, taking four, with three coming in the second stanza. VMI allowed just one to the Spiders.

Richmond jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as Oldham capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Keydets, finishing to the far left post.

VMI had a great scoring chance with 16 minutes left in the opening half as Seinfeld took a direct kick, but hit the shoulders of the Spider wall in front of him. But he was helped by teammate Morgan, who took a blast at the left post, pushing the effort just wide.

Despite 10 Keydet shots, the Spiders carried a 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the break. Richmond tallied eight attempts, including one on goal.

VMI had another great chance for a goal in the 60th minute as Zechman took a blast, but his shot drilled the crossbar and out of play.

The Spiders increased their lead in the 75th minute as Hoerner pushed across a long shot on a Richmond counter, just getting by VMI keeper Feuerstein. Mitch Reavis was given the credit for the long assist.

The Keydets return to action on Tuesday for a rescheduled game with the Hokies of Virginia Tech. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
