Keydets take down Mercer 4-2

LEXINGTON, VA – The VMI Keydets took down the Mercer Bears 4-2 in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The win marked VMI's first SoCon victory of the season and allows the likely scenario to host the opening round of the SoCon Tournament in early November. The Keydets improve to 5-11-1 overall and 1-4-0 in league play while the Bears fall to 0-12-4 and 0-4-2 in conference.

The first period was a shootout, with Mercer starting the scoring in the first 10 seconds. VMI's Yeirin Mejia and Jesse Lee would score the next two goals for the Keydets in the 12th and 24th minutes, respectively.

The Bears evened the score shortly after, and sophomore Sam Dowdy scored his first goal of the season in the final minute of the first period. VMI entered the break with a 3-2 advantage.

Mejia converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute, and the Keydets would hold strong for the remainder of the second frame to win 4-2 to secure the conference win. Senior goalkeeper Santiago Rocha tallied three saves in the contest, upping his season total to 58.

The Keydets will next be in action next Friday at Liberty.
