Moye Wins, Keydets Sweep Podium at VMI Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Jenna Moye opened her final collegiate season strongly, winning to lead a VMI sweep of the podium at the Keydets' cross country season opener, the VMI Invitational at Lexington's Virginia Horse Center.

Moye broke away from freshman teammate Natalie Young on the final lap and cruised to the win, clocking in at 18:35.70 over the 5K course. It was the first collegiate victory for the multi-time team captain and former Big South Freshman of the Year, as her previous best career finish was a second-place run, which came on this course in 2009.

Young, meanwhile, ran with Moye for the majority of the distance and wound up second, finishing in 18:51.80 in her first collegiate race. Despite being over 16 seconds behind Moye, the pair was still well clear of the field, as Moye's classmate, Leah Schubel, finished in 19:05.90 to place third.

The field of 22 runners included competitors from Longwood, VMI and James Madison, but it was the Keydets who placed four runners in the top five, as Michelle Church rounded out that quartet by finishing fifth in 19:18. Other VMI runners in action included freshman Kelsey Newcomb (19:49.80/10th), Hannah Dickinson (21:15.40/15th), Nina Srikongyos (21:39.70/16th) and Lindsey Carty (21:49.30/18th).

VMI cross country will return to action Sept. 15 at the JMU Open, currently set for a 10 a.m. start in New Market, Va.
