VMI Track and Field Announces 2012-13 Recruiting Class

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI track and field has announced its 2012-13 recruiting class, according to information released by the program early Saturday.

The class of 21 includes those participating in a mix of events, including a handful of throwers, one of the best jumpers in Virginia and several distance runners. One of the headliners, however, is sprinter Aron Long. Long (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) currently ranks fourth in the state in the 200-meter dash, finished seventh at the State Championships in that event and also placed third at the NW Regional meet.

One of Long's teammates this coming August will be jumper Avion Jones (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial), whose high jump personal best of 6'10” currently ranks him second in the state. Jones finished fourth in that event at this past indoor state meet, and has also triple jumped 46'6 ½” during his high school career.

The Keydet legacy of 800-meter runners could continue with another of the recruits, Avery Martin (Fork Union, Va./FUMA). Martin has a personal best of 1:53 in the 800, and currently ranks third in the state. He has also won the mile at the VISAA Championships during this outdoor campaign.

On the women's side, the Keydets once again add a pair of talented runners who could be a part of their cross country squad. Kelsey Newcomb (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) has run distances ranging from the 400-meters to a 5K cross country event, including finishing as the district champion in both the 1000 and 1600-meters. Meanwhile, Natalie Young (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) could focus more on the longer distances, as she has a 5K (XC) personal best of 18:15.43 and comes off a NW Regional title in the two-mile run.

“Our staff did a great job during this recruiting season,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “We brought in athletes in virtually every event, and expect them to provide depth and an infusion of talent to our program. These individuals are not only talented in the athletic arena, but are quality young men and women who we believe can accomplish great things here at the Institute. This current class could potentially grow by one or two, as we continue to work.”
