Sing's School Record Leads Keydets at VMI/W&L Carnival

LEXINGTON, Va.  – Jennifer Sing added yet another school record to her resume, as she was one of two event victors for the VMI Keydet women's track and field team during Friday's action at the VMI/W&L track and field carnival, contested at Washington and Lee's Wilson Field.

Sing cleared the bar at 4.05 meters (13'3 ½”) to break her own school record in the pole vault, as she is the only Keydet woman to ever clear 13 feet. In fact, only two women, Sing and teammate Kate Collins, have ever cleared 12 feet. On this day, Sing nearly did not have a chance at the clearance, as it took three attempts for her to tally a mark at 3.45 M. She would then go on to post just one miss combined over the next three heights, before recording the new VMI best on her third try at 4.05 M. The effort would have tied Sing for seventh in the nation coming into the weekend.

Also winning her event was Renee Reives, as the freshman took the discus title with a throw of 41.03 meters (134'7”) for her first career event victory.

“I thought we competed very well today,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Jennifer's pole vault effort was outstanding, and Renee threw very well in the discus. Jenna Moye put up a strong time in the 1,500, especially in a race that was very slow paced early, and our distance runners got off to good outdoor starts, especially Emily Dinning.”

Also competing in the discus was Mary Grace Lemon, the defending Big South champion in the event, who finished third overall. Lemon recorded a mark of 40.33 meters (132'4”). Meanwhile, Moye's time in the 1,500 was 4:46.85, good for a second place finish behind a D-III 800-meter All-American.

The aforementioned distance runners saw time in the 5K, and were led by Emily Dinning, who battled for third throughout the race and earned that spot with an 18:12 clocking. Leah Schubel, who clocked in at 18:42, got a seventh-place result, and Michelle Church, competing in her first race since early February, finished 10th in 18:52.

Finally, Thireyona Legg finished fifth in the long jump (4.98 M/16'4 ¼”) and Rachel Sing was seventh in the javelin (33.20/108'11”).

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, as the VMI/W&L Carnival concludes at Foster Stadium. Action will get underway at 8 a.m.
