LEXINGTON, Va. – The Virginia
Military Institute men's soccer team fell at home Saturday afternoon at Patchin
Field against the No. 15 Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers, who utilized
five first half goals and another three in the second to down the Keydets 8-0.
The
Chanticleers, who were tied for first place in the Big South Conference coming
into Saturday's game, put together a high-powered offense, which tallied five
goals in the first 40 minutes of the game. Ricky Garbanzo and Tevin Skyers each
had a hand in the first three goals. Garbanzo scored the first and third goals,
getting each assist from Skyers, who scored the game's second goal on an dish
from Garbanzo.
Coastal
Carolina (11-1-2, 6-0-0 BSC) got a final two goals in the first stanza from
Robby Joe Daniels, who was assisted twice from Shawn McClaws. One of the nation's
top scorers, Ashton Bennett, scored the first two goals in the second half,
getting help from Henrik Robstad and Nick May. Less than one minute after
Bennett's second goal, Jakub Stourac tallied the final marker of the day in the
69th minute. He was assisted by Matt Risher.
The
Keydets (1-10-1, 0-5-1 BSC) nine saves from a pair of keepers, including seven
from starter Daniel Kitchen, who played for 69 minutes before Alex Guerra came
in to the game for the final 21 minutes. Guerra made two stops and did not
allow a goal.
The
Chanticleers, who advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA tournament,
out-shot VMI 25-6, splitting their attempts with 12 in the first half and
another 13 in the second period. Coastal Carolina put 17 of those tries on
goal, while not allowing VMI a shot on frame. VMI's offensive efforts were
handled by Kyle Farmer, who took four of VMI's six total shots.
While no
cards were issued during the game, Coastal Carolina was called for 14 fouls,
including 10 in the second half. VMI was whistled just six times, with five
coming in the first period.
VMI
rounds out its three-game home stand on Tuesday when it takes on rival Liberty
University. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
