Keydets Down Davidson 32-12 Behind Dommert, Wine

LEXINGTON, Va.-  A pair of major decisions by senior Josh Wine and sophomore John Dommert to begin the night, coupled with a trio of Davidson forfeits gave VMI its first SoCon victory of the season Fri., Feb. 4 as the Keydets defeated the Davidson Wildcats 32-12. Junior Matt Brock and sophomore Evan Dill also added decision victories for VMI as the Keydets improve to 22-1-1 against Davidson all-time.

VMI (4-6, 1-1 SoCon) began the night by taking a 14-0 lead in the team tally, as Dommert, wrestling in his first bout at 197 lbs. this season, shut out Ike Crews of Davidson 10-0 to give the Keydets a 4-0 lead. Wine, ranked No. 15 in the latest InterMat rankings, followed suit with a major decision of his own with a 9-1 win over Charlie Wolf to extend the lead to 8-0 heading in 125 lbs.

After freshman Charles Gray picked up a forfeit victory at 125 lbs., Davidson's Alex Radsky pinned VMI's Luke Todd at the 1:54 mark in a match at 133 lbs. The pin was followed by a Wildcat decision, as Vitaly Radsky earned a decision win over junior David Yost by an 8-2 count to bring the score to 14-9 in favor of the Keydets.

The VMI lead was then cut to 14-12, as Davidson's William Ray defeated VMI's Ryan Goodsell at 149 lbs. The bout was scoreless after the first period, but Ray scored the lone point of the match at the 1:46 mark on an escape point and held onto the advantage the rest of the way to earn the narrow decision.

However, that would be the closest Davidson (4-8, 0-3 SoCon) would come to a win, as Davidson was forced to bouts at 157 lbs. and 165 lbs., sealing the Keydet victory and stretch the lead to 26-12 with two bouts remaining.

At 174 lbs., Keydet junior Matt Brock battled to a 2-1 decision victory over Donald Patrick of Davidson. Brock earned an escape point 35 seconds into the match to take the 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second frame, Patrick tied up the bout after he was awarded a point for Brock's second stall warning of the contest. However, Brock collected a riding time point at the conclusion of the match to take the 2-1 victory.

Sophomore Evan Dill picked up the final Keydet victory of the night at 184 lbs., earning his first victory of the season in impressive fashion with a 10-3 win over Chris Cirenza. Dill jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a takedown and near fall in the first 2:15 of the match and never looked back, outscoring Cirenza 6-4 the rest of the way to take the decision victory.

The 32 team points is the highest score VMI has collected this season, and is the highest since the Keydets defeated Franklin & Marshall 33-10 on Jan. 13 of last season at Cocke Hall.

The Keydets return to the mat Sun., Feb. 6 as the team travels to the All-Academy Championships hosted by The Citadel. Thee all-day event commences at 9 a.m. Live stats, video, and a live blog will be available, courtesy of The Citadel.
