ATHENS, Ga. - James Goodwillie set a new VMI record in the 200-yard backstroke Saturday Saturday, helping VMI finish fourth as the season-ending Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships wrapped up in Athens, Ga.
Goodwillie swam the preliminary round of the race in 1:53.70, finishing sixth in that portion of the competition and bettering his own mark by more than a second. He then went on to the evening's finals, where he finished fifth in a time of 1:53.72, falling just short of the morning's record performance. Regardless, it is the second-best finish by a VMI competitor at this year's Championships, trailing only Dallas Disbro's two third-place finishes in the diving events.
In the overall team standings, the Keydets finished fourth with 281 points. Davidson took home its second straight CCSA title, winning with 844 points, while Gardner-Webb was second (814) and College of Charleston was third (796). Behind the Keydets were Howard (227) and Florida A&M (57).
Also posting strong finishes on the meet's final day was freshman Ian Morales, who, after setting a new VMI freshman record in the preliminaries of the 100 free (48.22), finished 13th overall in 48.62 seconds. Matt Elliott also earned a berth in the finals of that race, finishing 16th.
A second freshman, Joe Dutter, finished 15th in the 200 back (2:10.12), while Matt Dale was 10th in the 1650 free (17:12.35). Benji Howard, Andrew Nelson and senior Josh Jeffcoat placed 14th-16th in the 1650 free, while Jack Sullivan was 11th in the 200 fly (2:09.50).
Finally, VMI's Lt. Col. Ray Porter was named the men's diving coach of the year for his efforts with the Keydet squad.
