LEXINGTON, Va.- Senior captain Kurt Zimmerman scored his first career goal in match four of the 2010 Dr. Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Thundering Herd of Marshall used a pair of second half goals to take the match, 3-1.
The Thundering Herd (3-0-1) got off to a fast start, generating three shots in the opening three minutes of play. Marshall would be rewarded for its efforts, as the first goal of the match came in the ninth minute as Sammy Boateng found a streaking Carl Munday on a cross from the right flank to give Marshall the early 1-0 lead.
The Keydets (0-3-1) earned their first offensive opportunity 10 minutes into the contest, as a counter-attacking senior Brian Harding fired a shot from 40 yards out, that was turned away by Marshalls keeper, Daniel Withrow, who parried the shot diving to his left.
After withstanding the offensive push by Marshall in the early going, the Keydets earned another solid offensive opportunity in the 30th minute, as junior Stewart Wilkinson ripped a shot from 30 yards out that sailed just high to the right side of the frame.
Wilkinson's effort led to Keydets controlling the majority of the offensive opportunities in the closing 15 minutes of the half. The most notable VMI chance of the half came with 3:35 remaining off sophomore Matt Seinfeld's free kick from 25 yards out on the left flank, as he took the rebound off of his shot that was stopped by Withrow sprawling to his right.
Heading into the second half, another Seinfeld free kick moments into the half from 50 yards out found the head of freshman Chase Barnett who was darting to the net, but the header sailed narrowly over the crossbar to keep the deficit at 1-0.
Marshall would earn its second goal of the match in the 59th minute, as the VMI defense conceded a penalty kick on a slide tackle just inside the 18. On the ensuing kick, Matt Butler blasted a shot into the top right corner of the net, extending the Marshall lead to 2-0 with 31 minutes remaining.
Less than two minutes later, Butler would send a pass from the left flank to Anthony Virgara, who ripped a try for 30 yards out that would hit the left post, and bounce off the back of VMI keeper Brian Sowell for the third and final Marshall goal of the match.
VMI would trim the Herd lead to 3-1 in the 63rd minute off of a corner kick, as Withrow bobbled a cross off a Seinfeld corner that was collected by Harding inside the 18, and was headed home by Zimmerman to run the score to the eventual final tally of 3-1.
Withrow (3-0-1) made six saves in goal, while Sowell (0-3-1) made one stop in the losing effort.
Earlier in the day, Liberty defeated St. Francis 3-1 to earn the tournament title, while Marshall came in second. VMI and St. Francis tied for fourth in the annual tournament, held in honor of Dr. Jay Sculley, VMI first men's soccer coach.
The Keydets return to action Weds., Sept. 15 as the squad travels to Raleigh, N.C. to take on ACC opponent N.C. State. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
