LEXINGTON - VMI Athletic Director Donny White will throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the USA Championship game at the 2010 Little League World Series this Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. (ET) in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
White, who played in the 1954 Little League World Series as a member of the Hampton, Virginia team and was the squad's starting shortstop, will be accompanied by seven of his teammates as part of a reunion organized by Little League President Steve Keener. The Hampton team will be recognized in a ceremony before the game.
The contest will be televised nationally on ESPN 2.
The '54 Hampton team won 8 consecutive games to advance to Williamsport as winners of the Region 4 tournament held in Salisbury, Maryland - beating both East Rutherford, New Jersey and Millburn, New Jersey in the Regional Tournament. The Little League format at that time was single elimination all the way to Williamsport and single elimination in the championship tournament.
The eight teams in the 1954 LLWS included Schenectady, New York (the eventual winner), Colton California, Needham, Massachusetts, Masontown, Pennsylvania, Melrose Park, Illinois, Galveston, Texas, Lakeland, Florida, and Hampton, Virginia.
Hampton was beaten by Colton, California, 4-2, but got to stay the entire week, enjoying being one of eight teams in the USA to reach the LLWS.
The 1954 LLWS had several noteworthy players in the week-long tournament. Baltimore Oriole slugger, Boog Powell, was a 12 year old on the Florida team. Ken Hubbs, National League Rookie of the Year in 1962 for the Chicago Cubs played for the Colton, California team.
The 1954 Hampton team delegation joining White in Williamsport this weekend includes Bobby Ball, Royce Bowden, Paul Causby, Byrd Harris, Ron Sowers, Frank Tabor, and Bob Walton.
White (Class of 1965) and Walton (Class of 1963) are both VMI graduates and also played baseball together at the Institute. White later served as head VMI baseball coach from 1982 to 1987.
