Roberts One of 25 Quarterfinalists for Brooks Wallace Award

LUBBOCK, Texas- Junior Sam Roberts has been selected as one of 25 quarterfinalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, presented annually to the nation's top shortstop by the College Baseball Foundation.

Roberts (Prince George, Va./Prince George) has enjoyed a career year for the Keydets as a junior, posting 10 doubles, nine home runs, 49 runs scored and 49 RBIs from the leadoff spot.  He has helped VMI to its best start in school history, starting every game this season, including 34 at shortstop and 11 on the mound, where he leads the team with six wins.

Entering the final two weeks of the regular season, Roberts is hitting .333 with a career-high .445 on-base percentage, thanks in large part to his 36 walks this season, the second-most in the Big South.  He ranks second on the team with nine stolen bases and has 19 multiple-hit games and 13 outings with multiple runs driven in this season.

Roberts was originally named to the Wallace Award Watch List back in March.  The Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Awards Show.  Roberts was one of two Big South players chosen as a quarterfinalist, being joined by Coastal Carolina's Taylor Motter.

The Keydets return to action Tuesday evening, taking on Richmond at Gray-Minor Stadium, with first pitch set for 6 p.m.  Fans can listen to the game on the VMI Sports Network online at www.VMIKeydets.com and on Lexington's Fox Sports Radio 1450 AM.
