Lacrosse Falls to Manhattan, 15-6

BRONX, N.Y. – Ten different Manhattan Jaspers notched points to lead their team to a 15-6 win over the visiting VMI Keydets Saturday, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's lacrosse played in Bronx, N.Y.

The Jaspers (4-4, 2-1 MAAC) were led by James Synowiez's six points, as the sophomore had four goals and two assists. Sal Perrotto also had six points, thanks to his two goals and four assists. VMI (2-8, 0-3 MAAC) was paced by Tim Moran's three points, which came on a goal and two helpers.

Manhattan started the game well, opening the contest with a three-goal run. The spurt was capped at 7:59 with a Kelly Mahon man-up goal, and the Jaspers led 3-0 just over seven minutes in. VMI answered with a Will Baker goal, the first of his college career, but Synowiez notched the quarter's final score with 4:24 left in the period to account for the score after one quarter, 4-1.

The Keydets cut the margin back to one, 4-3, on back-to-back goals by Jacob Weimer and Moran in the opening 3:10 of the second quarter. Unfortunately for the visitors, Perrotto beat VMI's Sean McCoy for a man-down goal with 10:54 left in the period and that started an eight-goal run for Manhattan. The push came over 16:59 of game time, and ended with a Jason Davis score that came with 8:49 remaining in the third, putting the Jaspers up 12-3.

The Keydets scored the game's next three goals, as a trio of different Keydets found the back of the net to cut the margin to 12-6. Bernie Mowbray and Bobby Davis tallied scores, before Brett Leonard capped the run with 10:30 left in the contest. Manhattan closed the game by notching the final three goals, accounting for the final margin, 15-6.

Despite the final score, several stats categories were very closely contested. Manhattan held just a four-shot edge in shots taken (41-37), but Jaspers' keeper Jon Fiorillo made 16 saves to help lead his defense.

VMI saw Stephen Robarge, who entered the contest third in the country in ground balls per game, grab eight to lead his club. The sophomore was also 15 for 22 at the face-off X. McCoy made seven saves in net for VMI before being relieved by Kelly McMinn, who also stopped seven shots.

VMI lacrosse will return to action Saturday, as the Keydets play host to the Hawks of Saint Joseph's University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Foster Stadium, and the contest will include a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project.
