Lacrosse Falls to Mount St. Mary's, 17-7

EMMITSBURG, MD. – Conference scoring leader Cody Lehrer had three goals and three assists and Andrew Scalley added three scores as the Mount of Mount St. Mary's knocked off the VMI Keydets 17-7 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's lacrosse played Wednesday in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Mount (9-4, 6-1 MAAC) scored the game's first two goals, jumped out to a 10-3 lead at halftime and never looked back en route to their sixth conference win of the year. VMI fell to 2-12 and 0-7 in MAAC action, despite two goals from Keydet scoring leader Tim Moran.

The Mount struck first, as they captured the opening face-off and got off a quick shot. Keydet goalie Kelly McMinn made the save, but the home team grabbed the ground ball and put in the rebound to go up, 1-0, just 1:15 into the game. 44 seconds later, they made it 2-0 on Scalley's first goal of the afternoon.

Moran got the Keydets in the scoring column midway through the quarter, as he scored off a pass from Drew Leonard. It was Moran's 21st goal of his senior season, and cut the margin to 2-1, Mount St. Mary's. It took less than two minutes for the Mount to double their total, as they scored twice in that span to go up 4-1 with 6:36 left in the period. That would be the score at the end of the opening quarter.

As the second quarter got underway, the home team tried to score quickly again, firing off two shots in a 16 second span. McMinn made both saves, however, and the score remained 4-1. Unfortunately for the Keydets, the Mount was able to push its lead to 5-1 just minutes later, as Scalley scored with 11:57 left in the half. VMI fired back, as Colin Bosse notched his 18th score of the season to make it 5-2, Mount.

The teams again traded goals, beginning with a Mount St. Mary's goal at the 8:58 mark to make it 6-2. Just over one minute later, Moran scored off a Brett Leonard pass to cut the margin back to three, 6-3. The Mount closed the half by scoring the final four goals, accounting for the halftime score of 10-3. VMI was outshot 21-9 in the first half, and that would mark the trend for the second half as well.

Indeed, the home team's offensive run would continue in the third quarter, as the Mount notched six of the seven markers scored in the third period. VMI's lone tally came with 4:53 on the clock, as Jacob Weimer scored to make it 12-4. Andrew Nieminski assisted on the goal, but the Mount ended the quarter by, once again, scoring the final four goals to make the margin 16-4 at the end of three periods.

The Keydets outscored the Mount 3-1 in the final 15 minutes, including goals by Brett and Drew Leonard, as well as Nieminski, but it was not enough as the Mount easily held on for the victory.

The Keydets were paced by Moran in defeat, as he tallied two scores. Both Leonard brothers posted a goal and an assist, while Weimer, Nieminski and Bosse had a goal apiece. McMinn made six saves in the first half, Sean McCoy had five saves over 20:23 of action and Matt Lindemann had three stops over the final 9:37. It was the first significant game action of Lindemann's career, and just his second appearance overall.

For the Mount, four players aided Lehrer and Scalley by chipping in two goals apiece, while three keepers combined for 12 saves. Mount St. Mary's clinched a berth in the upcoming MAAC Tournament with the victory.

VMI lacrosse will return to action Saturday, as the Keydets play host to the Canisius Golden Griffins for VMI's senior day. Game time at Patchin Field is set for 1 p.m.
