VMI Drops Road Contest to #1 Virginia, 20-6

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #1-ranked Virginia Cavaliers scored nine goals in the first quarter and went on to defeat the VMI Keydets, 20-6, in a non-conference lacrosse contest played Tuesday evening at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville.

Virginia never trailed in the game, as the home-standing Cavaliers notched the game's first four goals. VMI (2-4) ended the run with a Jacob Weimer goal at 8:12 of the opening quarter, but UVA (5-0) would go on to score five of the next six goals en route to a 9-2 lead that the Keydets could not overcome.

UVA was paced by Matt White and Chris Bocklet, who had four goals apiece, while Steele Stanwick had five assists. Virginia captured 10 of 12 face-offs in the first quarter, and fired 59 shots at the Keydets en route to the win. VMI was led by Tim Moran's three goals and Bobby Davis' pair of scores. Moran's trio of goals moved him into a tie for 10th on the all-time VMI list (76), while the senior midfielder now sits in a tie for ninth in total points (119).

After the home team sprinted out to the 9-2 edge after one period, UVA would add two goals in the first 31 seconds of the second period to go up 11-2. The Keydet offense responded, as Moran and Davis both found the back of the net. The scores came at 8:38 and 3:24 of the first half, and were sandwiched around a Cavalier goal, making the score 12-4. The home team would add a goal late in the period to account for its 13-4 halftime lead.

During the first half of play, UVA outshot the Keydets 35-13 and outgained VMI in ground balls 24-15. The Cavaliers also captured 13 of the 18 face-offs contested, although the teams split the six second quarter attempts at the X. Finally, VMI keeper Kelly McMinn had seven saves during the first 30 minutes.

The pace of the game slowed considerably in the third quarter, as only three goals were scored and just 19 shots were attempted between the two teams. UVA got the first two scores of the period, as Bocklet and White scored at 11:47 and 10:01 to push the home team's margin to 15-4. Moran answered for VMI, scoring with the Keydets a man-up to cut the lead to 15-5 after three quarters.

The Cavaliers would go on to score the first five goals of the final period, before Davis ensured the Keydets would not go scoreless in the last 15 minutes. His shot came off a Brett Leonard pass and accounted for the final margin, 20-6.

In addition to the exploits of Moran and Davis, the Keydets saw Brett Leonard post two assists, while Weimer added a goal and an assist. McMinn had double-digit saves for the third consecutive game, as he stopped 12 Cavalier shots in the setback.

VMI lacrosse will return to action Saturday, as the Keydets host the Vermont Catamounts at Foster Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
