Three Keydets Honored on Big South Post-Season Basketball Squads

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - VMI junior guard Austin Kenon (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman forward Stan Okoye (Raleigh, N.C.) were both named to 2009-10 Big South Conference post-season squads announced by the league office today.

Kenon was named second team All-Big South Conference while Okoye earned a spot on the Big South All-Freshman team.

Senior point guard Adam Lonon (Richmond, Va.) was also named to the league's all-academic team for men's basketball.

Kenon, who served as a team tri-captain, has scored in double figures in all but two games this season and ranks second overall in scoring (19.4), and second in Big South games (18.7). He leads the conference in free throw shooting (84.8%) and ranks fourth in BSC in assists (3.6), and is third in the BSC in 3-pointers made (2.79) and fourth in the league in 3-point percentage (33.3%). Kenon scored a career-high 38 points vs. High Point including six treys which is tied for the second highest scoring game in BSC this year. He has 12 games of 20 or more points and three 30+ point games, all which came against conference foes (Coastal Carolina -31 points, High Point-38 points, Charleston Southern-32 points).

Kenon ranks in the NCAA's top 20 in career three's per game and is fourth in the Big South all-time and has hit four or more 3-pointers in a game in 10 contests this year. He converted 14 of 15 free throws against High Point Feb. 16 and converted six straight in the final 14.1 of regulation in a win January 23. 

Okoye emerged as a top performer in mid-January and hasn't stopped since. In BSC games, he ranks 4th in FG pct. (.510), 4th in blocked shots (1.9), 6th in scoring (15.6), T-6th in rebounding (7.2). In all games, he ranks 3rd in FG% (.519), 6th in blocks (1.6), 9th in offensive rebounding (2.5), 11th in scoring (13.9) and 11th in rebounding (6.6). Okoye has produced nine double-doubles on the year - ranked 5th most in Big South, and has six double-doubles with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was named BSC Freshman of the Week three times (Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 15) and produced a five-game stretch in January where he averaged 22.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, shot 61% in FG%, hit 5-of-9 three-pointers and averaged 3.0 blocks.

Okoye scored a season-high 26 points at Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern and pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds at High Point. He has led VMI in rebounding in 11 of the last 13 games and tops all league freshmen in scoring and FG% in overall games, and in BSC games he leads all frosh in scoring, FG%, and blocks.  

Lonon is one of only two seniors on the team and serves as a team tri-captain. He holds a 3.13 GPA in Economics and Business and was named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.

Lonon has played in 28 games with 23 starts at point guard and averaged 3.1 assists per game He ranks in the conference's top-11 in both assists per game and assist/turnover ratio and has hit double figures twice with 10 point games against Liberty and High Point. Lonon dished out season-high six assists against Charleston Southern, Presbyterian, and Randolph College and also made four steals at George Mason. Lonon also pulled down six rebounds against West Virginia Wesleyan.

VMI (10-18, 5-13) enters Tuesday night's Big South Tournament as the eighth seed and will face top-seeded Coastal Carolina (26-5, 15-3) Tuesday night in the Big South tournament quarterfinals in Conway, S.C. at 7 p.m.
