Keydets Rout UVA-Wise, 120-88

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - Sophomore Stan Okoye registered his second double-double of the season with a career-high 28 points and 10 boards, while freshman Rodney Glasgow chipped in a career-high 23 points as the VMI Keydets defeated the UVA-Wise Cavaliers 120-88 Tues., Nov. 16 at VMI's Cameron Hall.

The win brings the Keydet mark to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since the 1985-86 season, and brings VMI head coach Duggar Baucom's career-record against non-Division I opponents to 21-0. VMI also earned its fifth consecutive 2-0 start at home, a streak dating back to 2005-06.

The Keydets were helped by a stellar 34 for 38 effort at the charity stripe, including 19 of 20 (95%) in the second half. Six players were perfect from the foul line, including Okoye and Burks going 6 for 6 apiece. VMI forced 25 turnovers, including 13 in the second half when the Cavaliers were held to 38% shooting. Finally, the Keydets continued their run of strong performances on the glass, outrebounding UVA-Wise 49-39.

Junior Keith Gabriel got off to a good start, scoring 15 of VMI's first 29 points, however, VMI trailed in the opening portion of the game until a Stan Okoye basket at the 10:17 mark knotted up the contest at 29-29.

Following Okoye's lay-in, the Cavaliers built up a three-point advantage, until a Gabriel bucket at the 8:38 mark tied the game at 36-36. VMI took its first lead of the game with 7:56 left in the half, as there were seven ties prior to Okoye being fouled on a layup. The sophomore then converted the 3-point play to put VMI up for good and give VMI a 3-point lead and Okoye's 14th point of the evening.

The Keydets began to pull away with 5:30 left in the opening stanza, as Gabriel found a darting Michael Sparks for a lay-up to give the Keydets a 50-40 lead, while another Okoye bucket with 4:53 remaining brought the Keydet advantage to 12 points.

With 1:15 left in the opening frame, Okoye hit his 19th point of the evening on a 3-pointer to extend the Keydet advantage to 66-46, and the Keydets added to the lead with 0.7 remaining. Following a pair of free throws by UVA-Wise's Norris Gaskins, Glasgow hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe to give him 15 points heading into the half and bring the Keydet lead back to 20 points.

The first half was hardly short on scoring, as the two teams combined to score 116 points in the opening frame. The Cavaliers were led by Josh Jordan's 11 halftime points, while Sam Eligwe had 10. As a team, the Cavs shot 56.3 perfect from the field in the opening frame, while the Keydets sat at a cool 53.5 percent.

Carrying a big lead into the second-half of action, the Keydets never looked back, extending their lead to 29 points at the 16:14 mark on a Michael Sparks lay-up to bring the tally to 82-53.

The closest the Cavaliers would come to regaining the lead was at the 11:39 point when a Mark Phillips tray from three cut the Keydet lead to 24 points. The Keydets hit triple digits for the second time this season at the 8:32 mark, as Gabriel scored his 25th point of the night on a runner in the lane to extend the Keydet lead to 100-69.

Okoye recorded the 10th double-double of his career, with 7:32 remaining in the second frame off a Mark Phillips miss. Gabriel now sits 18 points away from becoming the 34th player in VMI history to join the prestigious 1,000 point club, after current teammate Austin Kenon became the latest addition to the club only a year ago.

The Keydets will look to improve to 4-0 on the season when the squad returns to action on Thurs., Nov. 18 as VMI plays host to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks at Cameron Hall. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

Quotes - VMI Head Coach Duggar Baucom

"We had some really good offensive rebounding out there tonight. Stan Okoye had a few and made some big shots. They were just red hot at the beginning of the game and hit some great shots. They shot the ball really well from mid-range, but I am really proud of the guys of how we played the second-half and didn't let up, so that was good for us."

"Really proud of Wayne Whiting and Drew Absher, guys that don't get to play too much coming in and hitting their free-throws, and that's huge. Joe Carr going 8 for 8 in his opportunity was great for them."

"This year, our identity is going to be a second-half team. That was our goal coming into this year, and I'm proud of the guys, and even the guys that played late. They are a fun bunch to coach."
