Henderson Named Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Senior right-hander Chris Henderson has been named Big South Conference New Balance Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 22, it was announced Monday by the League office.

Henderson (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) hurled the fourth complete game of his career on Saturday, allowing one earned run on five hits in a 13-2 win over UNC Asheville.  The right-hander scored his first win of the season by striking out six without walking a batter, and allowing only three base runners through the first 6.2 innings.  In addition, he also worked an inning of scoreless relief on Wednesday at Virginia Tech.  His line last week read: 2 GP, 1-0, 0.90 ERA, 10 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, .162 opponents' batting average.

Henderson's gem was VMI's second-straight complete game, after Travis Smink hurled a CG on Friday afternoon.  It marked the first time since April 8 & 9, 2005 that Keydet hurlers threw back-to-back complete games, since Jimmy Thoms and J.J. Hollenbeck did so against Longwood.  Additionally, both of Henderson's complete games against Big South opponents have come at home when facing UNC Asheville.

Henderson (1-2) currently ranks in the top 10 in the Big South in ERA (4.15), strikeouts (26) and innings pitched (30.1).  He also holds the top career mark for walks per nine innings (1.72) in VMI history, while ranking fourth in wins (13), fifth in ERA (3.77) and opponents' batting average (.272) and 10th in strikeouts per nine innings (7.35).

This is the third time that Henderson has been named Big South Pitcher of the Week.  He also earned the honor in April 2007, when he set down 15 batters in a row while pitching 7.2 innings against #3 Virginia in a 5-3 win, before facing the minimum through six innings against High Point, leaving in the seventh with a 3-2 lead.  In March 2008, Henderson struck out 10 while pitching seven innings against High Point.

VMI returns to action on Tuesday evening, playing host to Richmond at 5 p.m. at Gray-Minor Stadium.
