Lacrosse Falls to Army in Road Matchup

WEST POINT, N.Y.? The VMI lacrosse team dropped its second game of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 17-3 to the preseason #22 team in the country, the Army Black Knights.

With the win in its season opener, Army moves to 1-0, while VMI falls to 0-2 on the young season.

In its opener last weekend, the Keydets had gotten off to a quick start, scoring just 38 seconds into the game. A repeat performance was not to be on this Saturday. While the first five-plus minutes of Saturday's contest were scoreless, Army got on the board at the 9:44 mark, as senior attack Jason Peyer scored the first of his game-high six goals. Peyer's first goal started a four-goal run, as Army scored a quartet of goals over the next 4:44 to pull out to the early 4-0 advantage.

Peyer added two more goals, his third and fourth of the period, to stake the Black Knights to a 6-0 edge after one quarter. VMI keeper Sean McCoy faced 21 shots in the opening frame, and made seven saves in the first 15 minutes.

The second period was more of the same, as Army pushed its lead out to 7-0 on Peyer's fifth goal of the first half, less than two minutes into the second quarter. The Black Knights continued to score, eventually taking an 11-0 lead at the end of one half. Peyer scored all six of his goals in the first half for the home squad, while VMI faced an astounding 38 shots in the first 30 minutes of play.

Army took a 15-0 lead after three quarters, but VMI continued to play hard, outscoring the Black Knights 3-2 in the final period. That closing 15 minutes included three first-time goal scorers in the collegiate ranks, as freshman attack Colin Bosse and classmates Andrew Nieminski and Keith Long all notched their first goals while at VMI. Long's was the final VMI score, as he tallied at the 8:02 mark of the final period to make the score 16-3. The Black Knights would add a final goal to account for their winning margin, 17-3.

VMI faced 58 shots on the day, as keeper Sean McCoy made 12 saves in the setback. Army was led by Peyer's six goals. VMI lacrosse returns to action Saturday, Feb. 21, as the team travels to Clinton, S.C. to face the Presbyterian Blue Hose. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
