VMI Drops Overtime Match to Coastal Carolina, 1-0

Box Score CONWAY, S.C. – A Matt Schroeder goal off a free kick with 12 seconds left in the first overtime gave the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers a 1-0 win over the VMI Keydets in a Big South men's soccer contest played Sunday in Conway, S.C.

After 99:88 of scoreless action, Coastal Carolina's Djamel Bekka took the free kick. Schroeder, a junior midfielder, headed the resultant ball past VMI keeper Brian Sowell to give the homestanding Chanticleers the win.

With the victory, the Chanticleers move to 5-2-6 overall and 2-0-3 in conference play. VMI falls to 2-11-1 and 1-4 in Big South action.

Coastal Carolina put the pressure on early, attempting eight shots in the first half of play with five being on goal. Sowell was up to the task, stopping all five of the Chanticleer shots on net. The Keydets had a pair of shot attempts in the opening half, but those went for naught as a John Sisco attempt went wide at 6:13, and an Amir Shihata shot followed suit some 15 minutes later, helping the game head to halftime scoreless.

The home team got off to a quick start in the second half, testing Sowell with a Bekka shot less than a minute in to the frame. The VMI keeper made the stop, and the Chanticleers would not have another shot on goal until 70:03, although they did misfire on six shots in between their attempts on net. During that time, the Keydets had a pair of attempts, as Kip Zechman had a try go wide in the 58th minute and Jacob MacIntyre forced Chanticleer keeper Scott Angevine to stop a header at 64:16.

At 70:03, Sowell stopped another shot by the home squad and the Keydets came right back with an attempt of their own, but Shihata was turned away by Angevine to prevent the game's first goal. Neither team could muster another quality try until the 85th minute, when Schroeder was stopped by Sowell to ensure the game would head to overtime.

During regulation time, Coastal Carolina had outshot VMI 20-6, while the home team had nine corner kicks to just two for the visitors. Eight of the Chanticleers' corner kicks came in the second half, but the game headed to extra time scoreless.

Coastal put a shot on net six minutes into the extra frame, as a Schroeder header was stopped by Sowell. Three minutes later, a Zechman shot was turned away by Angevine. A VMI foul moments later set the stage for the final moments and Schroeder's game-winning goal.

Coastal Carolina outshot VMI 22-7 over nearly 100 minutes of play, while the Chanticleers had 10 attempts on goal to VMI's three. Sowell had an impressive nine saves for the Keydets, while Angevine blocked all three VMI attempts on net.

VMI men's soccer will return to action Friday, as the Keydets play their final home game of the season by taking on High Point at Patchin Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m., and before the contest, VMI's senior class will be honored.
