Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. ? The VMI
Keydet Men's Soccer team dropped its season opener Friday afternoon in Maryland, losing a 3-0
decision to the Mount St.
Mary's Mountaineers.
VMI's Greg Hersh got the start in
goal for the Keydets, as the senior made his first start at VMI. The game was
scoreless for the first 22 minutes, until the Mount got on the board in the 23rd
minute, as Scott Phinith opened the scoring. The Mount would add two more goals
in the remainder of the first half, as they fired 13 shots at the Keydet
defense.
VMI mounted an offensive effort in
the second half, firing six shots in an attempt to rally. The Mount defense
held fast, however, and the Keydets fell short by the 3-0 margin.
For the game, Hersh made two saves
for the Keydets, while freshman Adrian Dominguez, who played the entire second
half, made three saves and did not surrender a goal. The Mount were called for
offsides three times on the day, while the Keydets did not commit that
violation.
The VMI Men's Soccer team returns
to action Saturday, September 6, as they face East Tennessee
State University
at Patchin Field. The Buccaneers are in their first season as a varsity
program, and will travel to Lexington
for the matchup which is currently scheduled for 11 a.m.
