LEXINGTON, Va.-
Sophomore third baseman Tanner Biagini earned First Team All-State honors while
sophomore reliever Chris Duty was named to the Second Team as the Virginia
Sports Information Directors announced their 2008 All-State teams on Wednesday.
Biagini (Greenville, N.C./Conley) hit .343
with a team-best 74 hits and 46 RBIs for VMI this season. His selection marks the second time in three
years that a Keydet has claimed First Team All-State honors at third base, as Kelly
Sweppenhiser did so back in 2006.
Duty (Richmond, Va./Monacan) adds a Second
Team All-State accolade to his previously-earned Second Team All-Big South honor. Duty went 5-0 with all five wins against
in-state opponents this season, collecting two saves while holding an ERA of
1.95. In 37 innings, Duty allowed
opponents to hit only .211.
“These are great honors for two of our best
young players,” said VMI head coach Marlin Ikenberry. “Tanner and Chris have bright futures ahead
of them, and it's nice for our guys to be recognized by the rest of the coaches
in the State of Virginia.”
VaSID
named William & Mary's Mike Sheridan its Player of the Year, Virginia's
Michael Schwimer its Pitcher of the Year, James Madision's Turner Phelps its
Rookie of the Year and James Madison's Spanky McFarland its Coach of the Year.
In 2008, VMI posted their third-consecutive
winning record, marking the first time the program had done so in 52
years. The Keydets tied for second place
in the Big South Conference with a 14-7 mark and went 11-8 against Virginia's
Division I opponents.
