Barham Named Lowe?s Senior CLASS Award Nominee

KANSAS CITY, Mo.? Senior left-handed pitcher Trey Barham has been named one of thirty candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, given annually to NCAA Division I student-athletes in eight sports, as the award focuses on the “Four C's” of classroom, character, community and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award is designed to honor the attributes of college senior student athletes who stay in school and pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring. Candidates are selected based on personal qualities that define a complete student athlete. While the on-the-field performance during their collegiate baseball careers is a factor in determining candidates and the eventual winner, their personal character and off-the-field achievements in the classroom and community are major areas of focus.

Barham is VMI's career leader in wins (19) and ranks second on VMI's career strikeouts list, currently with 223. A three-year weekend starter for the Keydets, VMI is 25-12 in Barham's 37 career starts.

This season, Barham is 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA in three starts, leading the team with a .242 opponents' batting average while striking out 18 in 18.1 innings of work. He was listed as a Preseason All-Conference selection by both Baseball America and SEBaseball.com.

Barham is one of two candidates listed from the Big South Conference, joining Coastal Carolina's Tommy Baldridge, while he is the only player listed from the state of Virginia.

A national media committee will select 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in mid-April. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote that will include coaches, media and fans. The award winner will be announced and recognized at the 2008 NCAA Men's College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The VMI baseball team returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Old Dominion at 4 p.m., before traveling to Williamsburg for a Wednesday showdown with William & Mary, slated for 5 p.m. at Plumeri Park.
