VMI Defeats Campbell, 88-76

LEXINGTON, Va. ? Thanks to a 16-0 run to open the second half, the VMI Keydets defeated the Campbell Fighting Camels 88-76 Tuesday night in non-conference action at Cameron Hall.

The win moves VMI to 7-2, and continues the Keydets' best start since 1976-77, when the squad opened the season 22-1. VMI is now 14-2 in home non-conference games since the current Runnin' Roos style was implemented prior to the 2006-07 campaign, and the Keydets are now 4-0 at home for the first time since 2001-02.

With the Keydets up by just a single point at halftime, VMI came out of the locker room firing. The home squad scored the first 16 points of the second half, as six different players scored in the opening five minutes. The spurt was capped with a Keith Gabriel three-pointer with 15:08 remaining, and Campbell never seriously threatened again.

The visiting Fighting Camels got off to a quick start, as they jumped out to an early 10-3 advantage on the strength of two three-pointers in the opening four minutes of the game. The Keydets responded with a Chavis Holmes trey at 15:53, cutting the lead to four. The three-point basket moved the senior into 17th on the Big South career scoring list, as he notched the 1,548th point of his VMI stint.

The next several minutes were marked with several turnovers for both squads, and back-and-forth play. VMI cut the Campbell lead to two on an Austin Kenon layup at the 12-minute mark, and was able to tie the contest on a Michael Sparks three-pointer a minute later. From there, the Keydets went on a 13-4 run over the next four-plus minutes, and held a 31-25 lead with six minutes remaining in the opening half.

Campbell battled back, and the visitors were able to tie the game on an Amir Celestin three-pointer with 1:15 left in the opening frame. Chavis Holmes made a late free throw, and the Keydets took a one-point lead to the intermission.

VMI was led by Chavis Holmes, who tallied 12 points in the first half, while all nine Keydets to see action in the first 20 minutes scored. Campbell shot just 1-of-5 from the foul line, while VMI was 7-for-21 from three-point range.

The second half began with the critical 16-0 run, as the Keydets took control. The visiting Camels cut the deficit back to 13 at the 12:38 mark, but VMI pulled back away to seal the game. A 20-6 run, which included 10 points by the Holmes twins, pushed the Keydet advantage to a game-high 27 with 6:30 to play, and Campbell could get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

On the night, VMI was led by Chavis Holmes' 23 points, including 6-of-8 from the foul line and 3-of-7 from the three-point line. Austin Kenon added 15 points, while current Big South Player of the Week Travis Holmes chipped in 13, to go along with six assists and seven steals. Campbell turned the ball over 26 times on the night, against just 14 turnovers for the Keydets.

The Keydet defense held Campbell's Jonathan Rodriguez to just six points, marking the first time he had not led the Camels in scoring this season. Rodriguez came into the game leading the Atlantic-Sun Conference in scoring at 22 points per game, and had been one of just two players in the country to lead his team in scoring and rebounding in every contest. However, the Campbell forward attempted just five shots on Tuesday evening, breaking his school-record 43-game double-digit scoring streak.

With the win, the Keydets have now won six of their last seven games, their best streak since capturing seven-of-eight contests from Dec. 8, 2007 to Jan. 14, 2008. VMI also sweeps the season series from Campbell, having defeating the Fighting Camels in Buies Creek, N.C., on Nov. 24.

VMI basketball returns to action Saturday, as they host the Southern Wesleyan Warriors at Cameron Hall. Tip-off of the non-conference matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Quotes --- VMI Head Coach Duggar Baucom:

“The second half certainly was the difference in this game. It was a good first eight minutes to start the second half. We went from a one point lead to 14 pretty quickly. I'm not really pleased with the way we finished it off. We were up 26 or so, and weren't very smart at the end. But it's tough to switch gears ? you go from attacking to holding it, and that's really not our mentality. We'll learn from that and get better.”

“We forced some things and got some steals in the second half which led to easy baskets. I thought the first half was as bad as we have played with the exception of the Jacksonville State game, but the energy we came out with in the second half, a lot of that was Willie Bell. I thought he was a huge difference as far as a spark coming back in the second half.”

“I'm glad we came out with the energy that we did in the second half and played more team basketball. We had moments in the first half where we were selfish, and I told the guys in the locker room 'that's not us'. We're 7-2 because we are not selfish.”

“Travis (Holmes) had another good stat line. He didn't shoot it like a guy who shot 61% last week, but 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, seven steals, one turnover, that's about as good as it gets.”

“Credit Campbell. I think Robbie had those guys ready to play certainly after being off for 11 days. They attacked our press as well as anybody. They got easy baskets on us early, so credit them for being ready to play after a long layoff.”

“We'll come out for practice Thursday and Friday and will be as sharp as we can be on Saturday, then be as sharp as we can in the classroom for a week with exams.”
