Keydets Roll to 49-27 Win Over Presbyterian In Season Finale

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior Tim Maypray scored four touchdowns to help VMI to a 49-27 win over Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon at Foster Stadium.

VMI closed out the season with a win on Senior Day and a 4-7 mark. Presbyterian finished with a 4-8 record.

The Keydets posted their first win a season finale since 2002 when the Keydets knocked off The Citadel 23-21 in Charlotte, N.C. VMI also logged a 4-2 mark at home, their first winning record in Lexington since 2003.

The Keydets rolled up 648 yards total offense including 497 on the ground and converted 8 of 11 third down tries. The 1,138 combined yards total offense by both teams set a new Foster Stadium record surpassing the 1,060 yards churned up by VMI and Gardner-Webb in a three-overtime game won by the Bulldogs, 55-52 in 2005.

Junior fullback Howard Abegesah collected his ninth 100-yard game of his career with 151 yards on 15 carries against the Blue Hose. It was Abegesah's fourth trip over the 100-yard mark this season.

Junior quarterback Kyle Hughes returned to action after a four-game absence due to a hamstring pull and completed six of seven passes for 151 yards and one touchdown.

Maypray, who played quarterback, slotback and receiver in the game, rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns and also caught three passes for 97 yards and a score. Maypray on the afternoon became the first player in Big South history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a career and also collect over 1,000 receiving yards.

Senior linebacker Jacob Rochester, playing in his final game, led the Keydet defense with 16 tackles including 10 solos, three tackles for loss (18 yards) and two sacks (10 yards).

Redshirt freshman quarterback Brandon Miley completed 32 passes of 56 passes for 318 yards and one touchdown. Senior wideout Brandon Clark caught nine passes for 106 yards and redshirt freshman tailback Mario Carter led the Blue Hose on the ground with 94 yards on 15 carries.

VMI never trailed in the game and took the opening kickoff and marched 60 yards over eight plays and opened the scoring on a Zach Collins 12-yard TD run off an option pitch. VMI overcame a 15-yard illegal blocking penalty during the possession and the score came on a third down conversion opportunity.

The Blue Hose tied the game at 7-7 when Terrance Butler took an 11-yard reverse toss for a touchdown at the 7:42 mark of the opening quarter. A fourth and inches conversion on a quarterback sneak by Miley at the VMI 40 sustained the drive and Miley also completed 3 of 4 passes for 31 yards on the possession.

The Keydets took the lead for good with back-to-back scoring drives. Maypray executed a four-yard QB option keeper to cap a nine play, 59-yard drive to push VMI ahead 14-7 with 3:18 left in the first quarter. A 25-yard jaunt by Abegesah to the PC 4 and a pair of third down conversions keyed the drive. A 50-yard scoring run by Maypray on the ensuing drive set up Travis Ludden's two-yard blast into the endzone to push the Keydet advantage to 21-7 with 14:27 left in the second quarter.

Miley brought PC back within a score when he tallied on a one-yard quarterback sneak that ended a 77-yard drive with 5:21 left in the half. VMI responded quickly when Maypray weaved 60 yards to the endzone to put VMI up, 28-14 with 4:26 left in the half. Hughes and Maypray teamed up on the first play of VMI's next drive with a 75-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-14 with 1:47 remaining, but PC capitalized on a blocked punt and clock management to produce a 13-yard slant pass touchdown from Miley to sophomore receiver Jeremy Cole with :14 left in the first half to pull the Blue Hose within a 35-21 count at the half.

The VMI defense stepped up in the second half forcing Presbyterian to punt twice and ending three drives on downs over the first five Blue Hose possessions after intermission. The Keydets extended their lead to 49-21 with scores on two of its first three drives of the second half producing touchdowns on a Maypray 34-yard TD scamper and a Hughes quarterback sneak from 21 yards out on a third and two call.

Miley produced Presbyterian's lone score of the second half on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 4:42 remaining in the game.

The season finale marked the first time VMI had all three of its top offensive weapons, Maypray, Hughes, and Abegesah playing in the same game since the Ohio game in week four.

Maypray's 235 rushing yards was the first time a VMI back gone over 200 yards since Sean Mizzer's 206 yard outing against Davidson in 2003. With Maypray and Abegesah each topping the 150-yard mark in rushing, it marked only the second time in school history two Keydet backs had done so in the same game since Tony Scales (204 yards) and Scott Council (191 yards) against Richmond in 1991.

HEAD COACH SPARKY WOODS-

On having key skill players back healthy for first time in several weeks
I felt like the loss of Kyle hurt worse than any of us would have dreamed of, in not only his good play and his leadership, but, I think it is a problem for other teams when he and Timmy (Maypray) are in the huddle at the same time, with the things that they can do.  I feel like if we had stayed a little healthier, I think we may could have won some of those games that we did not win.  It's a good lesson for us all, and the work that he (Kyle) did to come back was remarkable.  He's a good example of this entire team.

On VMI's offensive performance
“I think that it's about as good as you can do.  We showed the ability to throw the ball, as well as run the ball today.  The great throw that Kyle made to Timmy, you've got to be able to get to that ball that Timmy got to.  It was a great catch.  They were tough up front, they kept trying to penetrate our line of scrimmage, and they did a couple of times, and we were able to squeeze the ball.  Then, when we were able to pick up those linebacker blitzes, then we got dangerous with the fullback, with Howard making a bunch of plays in there.  I thought that we did a good job of keeping the football, making it hard for them to catch up.  I think that, if we did that well each week, we'd win a lot of games.”
