Men?s Swimming Defeats NJIT, 162-72

LEXINGTON, Va. ? The VMI men's swimming & diving team scored a 162-72 victory over NJIT on Saturday afternoon at the Clarke King Hall Pool.

Freshman James Goodwillie (Richmond, Va.) once again impressed, establishing new school freshman and varsity records in the 1000-freestyle, touching the wall in 10:04.89.  Goodwillie also won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.14.

In all, the Keydets won each event that they competed in, before swimming the final three events as exhibitions.

“Our guys always swim well at home,” said VMI head coach Bill Nicholson.  “Our pool doesn't have a reputation for being fast, but we continually set personal bests and even school records here.  Our team is locked in to what they want to do, and they're coming out at every practice and competition and showing it.  They're training hard every day, and we're competing as the highest level that I've seen in my years here.”

Several Keydets earned first-place finishes in the meet, with freshman accounting for five of the team's ten individual wins.  Goodwillie was joined by fellow freshmen Matt Elliott (Norfolk, Va.), who won the 50 backstroke (26.30) and 100 freestyle (50.69) events, while Benji Howard touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:53.01).

Other Keydet winners included junior Will Rowcliffe (Falls Church, Va.), who turned in an impressive time of 21.79 in the 50 freestyle, senior Daniel Bogert (Tempe, Ariz.), who won the 50 (28.78) and 100 (1:05.61) breaststroke.  Junior Tristan Euritt (Waterloo, Iowa) won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.33, while senior Trevor Stanco (Garden City, N.Y.) rounded out the winners with a victory in the 500 freestyle (5:34.18).

In the 200 medley relay, the team of freshman Matt Dale, Bogert, Rowcliffe and Euritt got the Keydets off to a good start to the meet, winning the event with a time of 1:43.06.

The men's swimming & diving team will not return to action until Saturday, Jan. 17, traveling to North Carolina to take on Pfeiffer.
