STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The VMI lacrosse team put together its best all-around performance of the season on Saturday afternoon, scoring three or more goals in each quarter to earn a 13-8 win over Wagner. The Keydets scored the games final six goals to pull away as they prevailed for their first conference victory of the season with the win at Wagner College Stadium.
Junior attackman Matt Harrison had his finest day in a Keydet uniform, as he tallied three goals and assisted on two to pace the Keydets. VMI also received multiple-goal performances from freshmen Brett Leonard (3 goals, 1 assist) and Tim Moran (2 goals, two assists).
With the victory, the Keydets improve to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in MAAC play. The Seahawks fall to 0-13, and 0-6 in the conference.
The Keydets started the game as well as they finished it. Leonard got things going by scoring the games first two goals, followed by a Harrison-assisted strike from Eric Harley to give VMI a quick 3-0 lead halfway through the first period.
After Wagner halted the run with a pair of goals to round out the opening period, VMI would score three of the next four to push their lead up to 6-3. Harrison scored two of his three goals during the run, along with Moran's first of the game. But the pesky Seahawks wouldn't go away, cutting the VMI lead to 6-5 just before the half.
But after starting out strong in the first half, VMI wouldn't have the same fortunes to open the second. Wagner scored three of the first four third period goals, and claimed their first lead of the game at the 6:01 mark after a score by Josh Hamilton.
But VMI would have an answer, as they went on a game-ending 6-0 run that featured goals from six different Keydets: David Jacobs, Kevin Hill, Moran, Matt Turner, Hayden Cox and Leonard. The Keydets were also able to keep the Seahawks in check thanks to seven second-half saves by freshman goalie Sean McCoy.
The Keydets held a 37-24 advantage in shots and a 39-32 mark in groundballs, and were also able to win 14-24 face-offs. Senior Rob DiDomenico helped that cause by going 9-13 on the day.
VMI returns home this week for their final home game of the season on Wednesday, April 25 as conference foe Mount St. Mary's comes to Lexington. Face-off is set for 4 p.m. at Foster Stadium.
