Ohio State Downs VMI, 90-57

COLUMBUS, Ohio -Ohio State had five double figures scorers and used a key scoring stretch over the last five minutes of the first half to break open a tight game and pulled away to post a 90-57 win Sunday before 6,670 spectators at St. John Arena.

Freshman 7-0 forward Kosta Koufos led the Buckeyes by hitting nine of 13 shots for the floor on his way to a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Also in double figures for Ohio State were Jamar Butler (12), David Lightly (11), and Evan Turner and Matt Terwilliger each with 10 points.

Senior forward Reggie Williams led VMI in scoring with 17 points and eight rebounds but was held to four points after intermission. Freshman guards Austin Kenon and Christian Hunter each hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Keydets trailed 29-24 with 4:57 left in the opening half when Hunter hit a 3-pointer, but the Buckeyes scored 14 of the game's next 16 points and capped the last 4:38 of the first half with a 14-4 run. Lighty started the run with a pair of free throws to start a 5-0 OSU run and following a Willie Bell jumper at the 2:20 mark to pull VMI within 34-27 with 2:20 remaining, the Buckeyes reeled off nine more unanswered points before Travis Holmes' two free throws with one second remaining stopped the Buckeye surge.

OSU was never challenged in the second half as the Buckeyes took a 43-29 halftime lead and quickly extended the margin to 51-31 on a dunk by Koufus with 17:25 remaining. The lead grew to 30 points when Evan Turner canned a pair of free throws with 3:49 left to make it 85-55.

Ohio State raised its record to 4-1 while the Keydets fell to 2-3.

Playing and effective zone defense while using its height advantage, Ohio State limited the Keydets to 30.1% shooting from the floor (22-73) and outscored VMI in the paint 43-14. The Buckeyes also took advantage of a 23-7 second chance points advantage and held a 55-31 advantage on the boards.

OSU connected on 22 of 31 free throws on the night for 71% while the Keydets worked themselves to the line for just seven attempts, hitting two.

VMI hit 11 three-pointers, its third highest single game total of the young season but launched 49 behind the arc on the night.

"We have to make shots, that's been the story of our whole year-making shots" said VMI head coach Duggar Baucom. "The twins (Chavis and Travis Holmes) had a tough game. We were like an eight-cylinder vehicle hitting on four cylinders tonight. They were way too good for that to happen. We had a game plan and for the first 14 minutes we carried it out. They went on that 14-4 run at the end of the half and we just started to stand around. We quit attacking. We're not very big and I was pleased with our effort on the offensive boards, we tried to compete there, but we just quit attacking. I told them we had to regroup for Wednesday night. Hopefully, we'll have more energy that night."

VMI will play four of its next five at home and opens the swing Wednesday night against Columbia Union at Cameron Hall. Tipoff will be 7:00 p.m.
