Swimming and Diving Hosts Gardner-Webb and Radford in CCSA Competition

LEXINGTON, Va.- The VMI swimming and diving teams hosted their first home meet of the season on Saturday morning in dropping decisions to Gardner-Webb in both men's and women's competition, as well as a women's competition to Radford.

The Keydets fell in Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) competition to the Bulldogs by a 154-54 margin on the men's side and by a 180-5 score on the women's side, while the score was 142-16 in a loss to the Radford women. In the remaining competition, Gardner-Webb's women defeated Radford's women by a 155-47 count.

In the men's competition, senior Jason Webb placed second in the 100-backstroke (57.88), while sophomore Will Rowcliffe also placed second in the 50-freestyle (23.19). Meanwhile, the Keydets' relay teams each scored second-place finishes as well. The team of senior Peter Borchelt and sophomores Justin Ferrell, Tristan Euritt and Will Rowcliffe turned in a 4:01.52 in the 400-medley relay, while the team of senior Peter Blades, sophomore Peter DeValk, Euritt and senior Chris Beyer also placed second in the 400-freestyle relay with a 3:32.77.

Blades also contributed a third-place finish in the 50-freestyle with a 24.36, while he tied with DeValk for third in the 100-freestyle with a time of 53.43. Other third-place finishes for VMI came from Beyer in the 500-freestyle (5:23.30) and Ferrell in the 100-breaststroke (1:09.82).

In the women's competition, the Keydets had only freshman Chelsea Nugent competing. Nugent established a new school record with a time of 59.42 in the 100-freestyle, defeating each of Radford's swimmers, marking a program first for a Keydet posting a first-place finish in a dual match against a conference opponent. Nugent also set a new rat record with a time of 28.62 in the 50-freestyle, while she also posted a 2:13.27 in the 200-freestyle.

The Keydets will be back in action next Saturday morning, taking on Randolph and Pfeiffer in a women's tri-meet at 11 a.m. at the Cocke Hall Pool, while the men's team will also take on Pfeiffer in a dual.
